I love the VT220 font I found. Looks just like I’m talking to a PDP-11 or a DECSYSTEM-20.

Mind you, I’ve got no idea what I’m doing…

  2. #2 by Chadwick on October 25, 2010 - 8:15 PM

    I see you’ve got the 3D filter on. 😛

    • #3 by Joshua on October 26, 2010 - 7:20 AM

      Is that good or bad?

      • #4 by Chadwick on October 26, 2010 - 1:47 PM

Depends whether you want to use red/green 3D specs to play the game. Unless you plan to, I’d turn it off.

  3. #5 by Chadwick on October 25, 2010 - 8:19 PM

Oh, and as far as the whole setup thingie goes (FYI, it works fine for me, and I’m heading south from the spawn point to set up camp), there’s a lot of potential help/advice/random chatter on the Minecraft Forums SMP Support page, including a how-to on setting up a Linux box for hosting.

    • #6 by Chadwick on October 25, 2010 - 8:50 PM

Oh, and as to the direction, for reference, the Sun/Moon rises in the east and sets in the west (obviously), but for when that’s not immediately evident, the clouds always travel from south to north.

      • #7 by Phillip on October 26, 2010 - 1:32 AM

Or…he could just build a compass. I’ve found that to be useful after getting lost a few times when I was carrying tons of ore.

        • #8 by Chadwick on October 26, 2010 - 5:26 AM

But the compass only points to the spawn point, not north.

          • #9 by Phillip on October 26, 2010 - 9:03 AM

Granted. But I know when I play, if I can get back to the spawn point, I can get to anywhere else I need to be.

          • #10 by Chadwick on October 26, 2010 - 1:49 PM

Oh, fine, be that way. I still just wish I could find some diamond. I’ve got assloads of redstone, iron, gold…even an obsidian source. But I’ve not yet found a single speck of diamond.

          • #11 by Phillip on October 26, 2010 - 7:01 PM

I know what you mean. I have tons of redstone, coal, iron, gold, but no obsidian or diamond. I cannot think of anything else to do with the materials. I’ve got powered mine carts, weapons, armor, pretty much everything really.

          • #12 by Chadwick on October 26, 2010 - 8:02 PM

You should come join the rest of us.

    • #13 by Joshua on October 27, 2010 - 7:20 AM

I can walk the logfile but it’s sometimes better to ask: What’s the off-peak time for this server? I only ask ’cause I’ll need to bring the Minecraft server process under the control of the RHEL service manager at some point – right now it’s running in a disowned subshell with background priority – it should be running with daemon priority which will give better performance.

      • #14 by Chadwick on October 27, 2010 - 7:34 AM

Although it’ll require some real-world experience to know for sure, I’d suspect that it’ll be least used in the mornings, Mon-Thu, before say…2 or 3PM. All of us (except Phil) are largely at work/school during those times.

  4. #15 by Joshua on October 27, 2010 - 7:21 AM

BTW: You can also access the server using dustpuppy.lakemasoniccenter.org if you don’t like IP addresses.

  5. #16 by Joshua on October 27, 2010 - 12:46 PM

Okay, it should be back up. I noticed that I bumped Christa. Sorry about that. The server was running as root which is a very bad thing. Now it’s in its own environment with daemon-level priority. It should run much better. Let me know if there are any problems.

  6. #17 by Joshua on October 28, 2010 - 8:49 AM

Yayyy!! Last night’s level 1 backup dumped 586MB of data from the Minecraft server. So the world is now safe. 🙂

    • #18 by Joshua on October 28, 2010 - 8:52 AM

I was going to migrate /opt/minecraft/world to /var/lib/minecraft/world so it would get backed up on the /var schedule instead of /opt. But /var has only 800MB free and /opt has 3.5GB. So I’ll leave it where it is.

  7. #19 by Joshua on October 29, 2010 - 4:57 PM

I’ma trust you guys to tell me when you want the server upgraded. I don’t plan to do the Friday patches until you guys decide if you want to play on them.

    • #20 by Chadwick on October 30, 2010 - 12:43 PM

I’m pretty sure the Halloween update I’ll want, though.

    • #21 by Chadwick on October 30, 2010 - 6:28 PM

Apparently the new update (already out) addresses a number of multiplayer bugs, so I think it’d be good to get. Minecarts and damage still don’t work, but I guess those are the next project after he takes a couple days off.

    • #22 by Joshua on October 30, 2010 - 6:56 PM

      Latest patch is applied. (1858CDT)

  8. #23 by Joshua on October 31, 2010 - 8:00 PM

F.Y.I: I started building a tunnel to connect to Christa’s place. It tees off near where my house connects and runs for a while. Then I make a four-square adjustment back to the right and continue. At the moment, it pops up right at the base of her hill. You can tell the spot ’cause there’s a tree growing out of 9 squares of cobblestones.

    • #24 by Chadwick on October 31, 2010 - 10:02 PM

She says that’s cool, so long as you don’t build to actually inside her house.

      • #25 by Joshua on November 1, 2010 - 7:23 AM

Okay so if I just pop up where it is at the base of her hill and let whomever climb up themselves then?

  9. #26 by Chadwick on November 8, 2010 - 12:59 PM

Hmm…is the server down for some reason, or is it just refusing my connection?

    • #27 by Joshua on November 8, 2010 - 1:04 PM

Down for some reason. Finding out why as I type.

    • #28 by Joshua on November 8, 2010 - 1:08 PM

There’s a 15K technical log explaining the error but I’ll have to FTP it since I can’t possibly blast it all to my browser.

I’ll restat the server process and see if it stays up.

    • #29 by Joshua on November 8, 2010 - 1:10 PM

It seems to be up now. I’ll grovel over the log and give a cause of death later.

      • #30 by Joshua on November 8, 2010 - 1:16 PM

Random OpenJVM error unrelated to Minecraft. If it happens again, I can switch to the Oracle JVM.

        • #31 by Chadwick on November 8, 2010 - 2:05 PM

*shrug* At least we know the reason. Always better than random unexplained.

          • #32 by Joshua on November 8, 2010 - 2:09 PM

Well, in context, it is random unexplained in relation to the JVM. The devs really aren’t sure why that bug is happening but are always interested in more core dumps. Which is good because the JVM automatically files itself with their bugzilla when it crashes.

          • #33 by Joshua on November 8, 2010 - 2:10 PM

Uhh… If you can’t parse that last sentence, don’t worry. I left about six words out and I don’t care to try and sort out exactly what I mean there.

    • #34 by Chadwick on November 10, 2010 - 5:48 PM

Hmm…did the OpenJVM eat it again?

      • #35 by Joshua on November 10, 2010 - 5:50 PM

Nope. I’m updating ’cause I have to our your clients will start refusing to connect.

      • #37 by Joshua on November 10, 2010 - 5:52 PM

        It’s back up now.

  10. #38 by Joshua on November 11, 2010 - 4:15 PM

When we gonna has teh beer tastins? I don’t think Saturday gonna work. But I’m free on Friday or next-next Saturday.

    • #39 by Chadwick on November 11, 2010 - 8:08 PM

Gonna have to discuss with Christa and get back to you.

      • #40 by Chadwick on November 11, 2010 - 8:10 PM

Discussed. Apparently she would like to see you on next-next Saturday (which I am reading as November 27th).

        • #41 by Joshua on November 12, 2010 - 7:17 AM

Right. Perfect. Thanks! I’ll count on it being for then.

I suddenly got an e-mail for every comment on this page. I dunno why.

          • #42 by Chadwick on November 12, 2010 - 10:18 AM

Must be because I switched it out from a post to a page. You can now find it listed at the top of the blog, next to Home and About.

          • #43 by Joshua on November 12, 2010 - 10:23 AM

I noticed. That’s cool. I’ll have to use it as a forum for status updates.

  11. #44 by Joshua on November 19, 2010 - 7:14 PM

UPDATE: This is why I’m migrating the server to a new box:

    The following files are unowned:
    398086 0 drwx—— 19684 miner 43115 4096 Nov 18 23:12 /opt/minecraft/world/u/x

They’ve been assigned to nobody:nogroup – please find out who they belong to and assign the proper ownership.

    -cron daemon on dustpuppy

  12. #45 by Joshua on November 20, 2010 - 10:04 AM

At some point this morning, I’ll be shutting down dustpuppy for a few minutes to move it into the new rack. It will be back up then until I get the Minecraft server moved over to Javacraft.

    • #46 by Joshua on November 20, 2010 - 10:38 AM

      Dustpuppy’s back up now.

    • #47 by Joshua on November 20, 2010 - 11:02 AM

Welp, the only component I DIDN’T test (the PSU) is the one that doesn’t work. So I need to go get an ATX power supply at some point before I can set up Javacraft. It’s always something…

  13. #48 by Joshua on November 20, 2010 - 4:36 PM

    ADVICE:

Here is the Minecraft Server’s config file:

    #Minecraft server properties
    #Wed Nov 10 17:51:49 CST 2010
    online-mode=true
    no-animals=false
    monsters=false
    server-ip=
    server-port=25565
    max-players=20
    hellworld=false
    level-name=world

Anything anyone want changed? Let me know. Thanks!

    • #49 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 10:57 AM

Nothing I see here at the moment. Though I’m thinking perhaps we should get a server mod set up that would allow us to blacklist people or whitelist the place.

      • #50 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 10:59 AM

I can look into it. So we’re happy with no hell, no monsters for now? Espcially seeing as how we have no way of fighting the monsters if I did turn them on…

        • #51 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 11:05 AM

Yeah, and until Hell gets correctly implemented, it’s for the best. Though I see that it’s possible to at least add names to a banned.txt for a blacklist.

Are you on the admin list?

          • #52 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 11:06 AM

I don’t think I ever did add myself. Reason being, I can just screen in and type admin commands at the console anyway. But I probably should add myself just for good measure. You wanna be one too?

          • #53 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 11:07 AM

Probably we should have a couple. Or at least Ops for our trusted people. Even if it’s just the two of us.

  14. #54 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 12:55 PM

Yeah, I’m not sure if you can track who’s been on, but I got seriously defaced by some asshole. My tower’s mostly gone, I’ve got lava flows, at least three swastikas, and they stole all my supplies to build them.

    • #55 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 12:58 PM

I can look at the logs and get you an IP and username. I can’t blacklist from work though since I don’t have a text editor available over Webmin.

      • #56 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 1:04 PM

And Christa’s and Markus’ places got hit. Christa’s whole turf has been burnt to the ground. What’re the odds we can rollback to pre-vandalism?

        • #57 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 1:06 PM

Fairly good with the new server version. I have daily backups I can roll back to. I’m much more confident this time than last time.

    • #58 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 1:01 PM

Looks like they trashed your place too.

    • #59 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 1:01 PM

      ZaloMonkada 129.116.50.68
      advurb 97.77.49.64

advurb was talking to Dorney about your wall but seemed pretty cool from the chat logs. Shortly after he dropped off, ZaloMonkada popped on for about 10 minutes and then left.

Did you want to ban both / either of them and / or restore the world? How bad is the damage?

      • #60 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 1:03 PM

There was also cheseej3rk 76.66.38.157 but he/she was on the same time you were and hasn’t come back.

        • #61 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 1:21 PM

I suspect it was cheseej3rk, quite honestly. He was on twice; the first time I said hello, and they logged off pretty quick, but they came back later when I was idling. And 10 minutes isn’t long enough for everything that was done, i don’t think.

          • #62 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 1:25 PM

            k. I’ll D/L the whitelisting mod and put everyone else on it. I’ll need a list of usernames then to add to the whitelist since I don’t know everyone’s yet.

          • #63 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 2:05 PM

            kiijkasa

            axithmal
            mattie03
            DieBretter

And I’m not 100% on the spellings of the rest here, but perhaps your logs can clear that up.

      • #64 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 1:07 PM

It’s REALLY bad. Restore is requested, and as far as what to do with those guys…I dunno, I think we may want to grab like Hey0’s mod to get a whitelist functionality, and only bring people in on invite.

        • #65 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 1:09 PM

Agreed on the mod. I can do the restore ~4 PM this afternoon. Do you want me to leave it up or shut it down for now?

          • #66 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 1:15 PM

Maybe we should just bring it down for now.

          • #67 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 1:19 PM

            It’s down.

          • #68 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 5:04 PM

            K. Which is more painful? Fixing the damage or rolling back to Nov. 11, which is the last time the backup actually ran? I get a “success” message daily but apparently, tar will report success even if it can’t write the output file. Which it couldn’t. And hasn’t since Nov. 11.

          • #69 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 5:20 PM

I think we’re gonna be resigned to repairing the damage. It’s annoying, but not irrecoverable. At least the asshole mostly used my own materials to deface my property, so it’s mostly reclamation.

          • #70 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 5:23 PM

And Christa, the next-hardest-hit just needs enough wood to rebuild for the most part, since the guy ignored the majority of her work.

          • #71 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 5:40 PM

            I’ll help where I can.

I’ll get the mod installed too.

        • #72 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 5:04 PM

Feel free to kick my ass the next time you see me, BTW, for not checking this sooner.

    http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Spawn_jail

I was talking with a friend last week about Minecraft, and he mentioned this… can’t see it because I’m at work, but at least it’s got the right topic.

    Kurt’s name is Axithmal

Did you see what happened to my place? I know you’ve rolled back the server (<3 backups), but I'm still curious.

    • #74 by Joshua on November 22, 2010 - 3:01 PM

I haven’t rolled back yet. Did you want me to start it up so you can take a look around?

      • #75 by Matt on November 22, 2010 - 3:16 PM

Meh, I’m at work, then class till later tonight, so no.

    • #76 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 3:05 PM

Actually, so far as I can tell, you didn’t get touched at all, except the part where all the trees near you burnt down. Though I did knock a few 1×2 holes in your walls to get in and look around once I talked to Josh about restoring the place.

      • #77 by Matt on November 22, 2010 - 3:18 PM

        VANDAL!

…my only regret is not burning the forest down myself.

        • #78 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 3:20 PM

I know, right? But the giant lava-covered swastikas in my territory were a bit odd. And they were built out of the brick that I’d been carefully collecting for my house.

    • #79 by Chadwick on November 22, 2010 - 3:07 PM

Oh, and Kurt’s name is now corrected in my brief whitelist, so we can have it in one place.
