#1 Exhaust flappers

Exhaust Flapper

Exhaust Flapper

Exhaust flappers are just flat caps that sit on top of exhaust outlets and are attached to the pipes by hinges.  The idea is that when there’s sufficient gas pressure from the engine pushing exhaust out, the flap lifts to allow the gases to escape.  When there isn’t, the flap closes under its own weight, preventing rain from getting into the exhaust pipes and causing rust and other havoc.  My favorite time is when the engine is idling and the flap bobs up and down going “tink! tink!” every time it shuts.  :3

Happy π Day

Today is the day we celebrate the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of the unit circle.  Hooray!  I was going to post an algorithm to calculate π accurate to 2037 digits but I don’t have the patience, desire, or time before midnight tonight to apply the Fast Fourier Transform to this mess:

See you on τ day!

I love baking, but it’s too f-ing hot outside. So, I’ll just live vicariously through this girl.

No Access to Shortwave

To settle a bet, could someone with access to a shortwave receiver tell me if Cherry Ripe (21866 kHz USB, transmitting from Humpty Doo, Northern Territory, Australia with a target coverage of mainland China) is still on the air?  I’ve found few references to it after the frequency change and transmitter move in November of 2009.  I do know that its ENIGMA E3 sister station, the Lincolnshire Poacher, is confirmed dead in 2008.  Both were operated by British Intelligence for an unknown purpose (but speculated to be used for communication with undercover foreign operatives).

Also, UVB-76 is a lot less interesting now that we know who uses it and why.  (It’s a propagation widget / relay testing station used by at the very least the Republic of Lithuania.  We still don’t know who runs it or what program it’s part of.)

The Quest for Girlyness: Makeup Part 1

You may have read that I recently received a massage at Enve. While we were there we saw a sign up for a “Girls Night Out”. It promised to be an entertaining night of makeup demonstrations from the Bare Minerals collection. I had told my mom about my new quest for girlyness, in not so strange of a way, so when she saw the noticed she pointed it at it and said, “This is what you wanted isn’t it? To learn how to put on makeup?” She looked up at the lady behind the desk and told her we were going to show up. I was a little worried, but it is one of the things that I wanted to learn along the way.

So, on to the next adventure: Makeup, Lesson 1 Read the rest of this entry »

Soup, is it Always Better the Next Day? (Recipe Included)

Along with my new Quest for Girlyness, I’ve been trying to clean up my eating habits. It’s not like I don’t know what’s good for me and what I shouldn’t have, I just really like good tasting food. The problem with that is, the things I know that taste good, happen to be very bad for me.  This means that I’ve really been putting an effort into finding food that’s good for me and tastes yummy. Turns out that it’s not as hard as I might have thought it would be. Read the rest of this entry »
