Paying Back the Gov’t…

So I finally tracked down all my school loan providers (it’s like they played Hot Potato, considering how many times these companies re-sold my loans), and I’ve learned that my school loan repayments come out to about $412 a month. From my own numbers I budgeted $400, so it’s not far off what I expected… but dang, that’s a lot of money.

Anyone have experience with loan consolidation? Half my loans are at about 3% (read: I applied for them pre-recession) and the other half are at 6.8% (post-recession), and I was wondering if I could drop some of them down to a nicer interest rate.

Weekend of Feb 20

This weekend was a pretty quiet weekend for me. On the one hand, I felt boxed in and restless, and on the other hand, I enjoyed the silence.

Graduation Party Weekend

I posted this on Facebook and invited everybody I could remember, but just in case, here’s a reminder.

Graduation Party Weekend

(Friday Jan 29, 7PM, through Sun Jan 31, 7 PM)

I graduated with a Bachelor’s in English! Now what? Throw a party!

Since I know you all have varying school/work/life schedules, this isn’t a one-day thing. You can come and go all weekend. Simply call, text, or stop on by. We’ll have computer and board games, food, drink, and probably some rocking tunage.

Impromptu trips to Bayshore Mall for fine dining ( are very likely.

No presents necessary, simply your presence. Contact/RSVP info/map after the jump.

Holy Crap, It’s the Future.

It’s beginning to dawn on me that it’s finally 2010. This is the year we should be sending Dr. Chandra to fix HAL 9000. We should be opening Stargate travel to the public with the help of the Aschen. Wikus van de Merwe should be evicting all the prawns from District 9, and in 5 years Doc Brown will be hovering above my head with the help of a Mr. Fusion. Prototypes will be out soon, I’m sure.

I now officially have a Bachelor’s of Arts in English with Commencement Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I don’t have winter break or summer break or anything break anymore, just paid time off of work. I’m an adult now. What am I going to do with it?

I don’t really know. I’ve been given advice to take it slow, to not rush into redefining myself now that I’ve lost the “university student” definition. I think there’s wisdom in that. To that end, I plan to:

  1. Clean my apartment real good. Gift/Donate/Resell/Throw out all the stuff I’ll never use again and make room for whatever’s next.
  2. Get more shelving units and possibly a new desk and chair for holding the computer. Aka “Make homes for the stuff I’m going to keep.”
  3. Finish the cake that’s sitting on my kitchen table.

Suggestions? Ideas from fellow graduates? How did you handle the transition out of school?

Best Windows 7 Review Yet

Taken from a Slashdot post by tenzig_112:

I get the impression that the Windows 7 launch is a lot like seeing an old girlfriend suddenly show up on your doorstep wanting to get back together.

I found it!

Remember that Snow Patrol vs Rocky Horror Picture Show mashup I was looking for? Yeah, I found it. It’s called “Chasing the Time Warp”, which at least helps me narrow it down, and I found an Imeem stream:

Now, to find a place to purchase/download it.

Muse: The Resistance

I was going to write a long review of the new Muse CD, “The Resistance”, but this review from the LA Times caught my eye, and I had to share:

On the other hand, much of “The Resistance” reflects how uninterested the members of Muse are in dialing down their appealing flamboyance to attract Daughtry and Nickelback fans.

Quite frankly, I think that qualifies Muse for artist of the year.

Their songs this CD have more in common with “Starlight” than “Supermassive Black Hole”. However, if you’re a big fan of Abba, Queen, Rush, or the piano styles of Rachmaninoff, Lizst, and Tchaikovsky, you’ll want this CD, stat.

Personally, I can’t take it out of my OGG player.

Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $30

In case anyone was wondering, the Ars Technica story about MS offering upgrade copies of Windows 7 for $30 instead of $130 does apply to UWM students.

Ars Technica Article: Microsoft offers Windows 7 to students for $30

Microsoft Website for Purchasing:

I got my confirmation for eligibility today; whether or not I’ll buy one is another issue.

I Used to be a Gallentean: Part I

I’m in the mood for writing fiction again. I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but I am, and I intend on taking advantage of it while it lasts, since it hasn’t come around lately. This is the first of what I expect to be a multi-part piece about (don’t hurt me) my EVE Online characters. It’s also been posted in the “In Character” section of the EVE forums.

Mashup Hunt…

So I was listening to EVE Radio a while back and I heard a mashup of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” and the “Time Warp” song from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. If anyone can find me a copy (paid or gratis) of the mashup, I’ll be eternally grateful.
