(cons (aCen, comicCon, anthroCon, genCon))

The title is a reference to the LISP cons function that glues two or more objects together into a binary tree.

I’ve decided that I should go to at least on con this year.  It would be awesome if I could get someone else out of their house for a while to go with me.  I’ve got 4 ideas:

  • Anime Central
  • ComicCon
  • AnthroCon
  • GenCon

Here are the facts of each:

Anime Central

Theme:  Anime, Manga, Japanese Culture
Location:  Rosemont, IL
Dates:  May 20-22, 2011
Likely Mode of Conveyance:  Car
Website:  http://www.acen.org/

I’m not too into anime, manga, or Japanese Culture but I still think it’d be fun to go to.

ComicCon

Theme:  Comics, Popular Art, Cartoons
Location:  San Diego, CA
Dates:  July 21-24, 2011
Likely Mode of Conveyance:  Plane
Website:  http://www.comic-con.org/cci/

ComicCon always attracts the best cartoonists, writers, and voice actors, as well as generally-known artists in the fantasy and sci-fi arts communities.

AnthroCon

Theme:  Anthropomorphic Animal Art, Cosplay
Location:  Pittsburgh, PA
Dates:  June 23-26, 2011
Likely Mode of Conveyance:  Car, Train, Bus, or Plane
Website:  http://www.anthrocon.org/

It’s a furry convention.  Likely to appeal only to me (’cause I’m a furry), Sean (cause they have some damn talented artists there), and one other person who’s secretly a furry and doesn’t want anyone to know.

GenCon

Theme:  Games
Location:  Indianapolis, IN
Dates:  August 4-7, 2011
Likely Mode of Conveyance:  Car, Train, or Bus
Website:  http://www.gencon.com/2011/indy/default.aspx

GenCon is the most awesome gaming convention ever.  It doesn’t matter what sort of games you play, all gamer geeks are at home at GenCon.

Let me know your thoughts on any of these.  Thanks!

IL and IN are at least within a distance I’m willing to cover. I don’t think I’ll be getting on any planes until sometime after the TSA stops…well, basically all the security theatre.

… and one other person who’s secretly a furry and doesn’t want anyone to know.

We can totally let everyone know that Andrew’s a furry.

LOL you’re evil. We’re not gonna play “guess the furry.” If he or she wants to own up to it, that’s fine. But let’s not have a furry witch hunt. (Furry witches? Neat idea.)

Despite my near-hourly checks for new comments around here, it’s amazing how often I never see some of them.

Pfft. Don’t try to pass it off on Dourney, we all know it’s you.

Don’t tell me you don’t enjoy a good catgirl, Phil.

Furry? I’ll pass. But latex/PVC? That’s more my cup of tea. I blame Batman Returns for that.

            So, no good?

          • #9 by Phillip on December 31, 2010 - 4:16 PM

That doesn’t quite do it for me.

          • #10 by Joshua on December 31, 2010 - 4:53 PM

            Well, I think she’s cute.

            I guess I don’t get Phil.

I just love all the furry fingerpointing. (furry fingers?) I didn’t mention that to start a go-round. I mentioned it to say that there may be some support for Anthrocon as an option.

Well I do have a history with Acen. I would be willing to go if it wasn’t held during finals, but fuck, I’m a screw up with no future, what do finals mean to me anyway. ACEN! (sorry, I’m a bottle of wine in)

Myself and a good chunk of the Brown Deer crew (Matt, Kurt, Jon) go to GenCon every year. Usually we just go on Saturday for the vendor hall, but I went to a seminar with Michael A. Stackpole and it was excellent; I want to go to more of those this year.

Stackpole is far from the best author I’ve read, but he’s pretty solid, and fairly prolific among the universes I read.

Here’s another one that looks interesting AND it’s local:
