Wandering Fingers

Get your minds out of the gutter – I’m not nearly lucky enough to be referring to that.  This is about music.  I was playing a guitar with a capo at the 2nd fret to practice Alice’s Restaurant for Thanksgiving and I messed up fingering a G Major chord but realized my mistake after the first string’d been picked, causing a hammer-on.  That reminded me of the bass part of the intro piano chords to Elton John’s “Someone Saved My Life Tonight.”  Since I had the capo at the second fret already, I decided to play it.  It’s the only legitimate use I’ve found for the 3rd position, semi-open C#dim chord, which is a pain in the ass to finger if you haven’t cut your pinky nail in a while.  The song is written in the key of DbMaj. but my voice likes it better in DMaj, which happens to be the key Alice’s Restaurant is in.  My mom was wondering why I was playing Elton John songs when I was supposed to be practicing for Thanksgiving.

And I would have walked head-on into the deep end of the river…

P.S. – I usually end up in “One Toke Over The Line” by Brewer & Shipley if I misfinger Alice’s Restaurant.  This is the first time I ended up in an Elton John Song.
