Time Travel

Was just catching up on my webcomics, and I thought to myself, more or less out of the blue, “If you had a way to travel backward in time, the only way you could really know whether interacting with the past would have negative consequences would be to alter something and see whether you wipe out your timeline.”

But you would also need some cross-time communication method since your past self would have no way of knowing if the future was different. Unless you took detailed notes of how the future was in your “home” universe, before going back in time and messing with things.

Well the obvious thing to do would be to engage in some sort of genocide and see if it gets noted in your textbooks/wikipedia when you get home. And if it does, whether that has any notable/noticable impacts on the rest of reality/history.

If not, it may be a case of parallel realities/splitting timelines, in which case you may have just trashed someone else’s past/future.

Wasn’t there an xkcd about that?
