When President Obama took the stage at his State Dinner in India, the band played “Hail to the Chief,” the traditional march of the Office of the President. The stupid news people on Good Morning America said that the band played “Pomp and Circumstance.” WTF?
First of all, most have never heard the entirety of Pomp and Circumstance since it’s composed of six military marches. They’d be forgiven for referring to Op. 93, March #1 as “Pomp and Circumstance” since it’s the one commonly played at commencement ceremonies at academic institutions in the United States. But that’s not what the band was playing. They were playing “Hail to the Chief,” which is itself a march taken from a musical setting for a narrative poem called The Lady of the Lake.
