After trying a bunch of Linux distros on my mom’s old box which I thought was an AMD AthlonXP but which turns out to be a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz box. It has 1GB of RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti4200 (64MB, AGP). Kubuntu was pretty but had lots of problems and was terribly slow. So I looked to Arch. I didn’t bother to get it installed since Xubuntu seemed to be a perfect balance between minimum hassle and maximum usability. And that seems to be the case. Flash player installed fine, Java installed fine, the soundcard works out of the box, etc. It even migrated the user profile from Windoze so I didn’t have to set up Thunderbird or Firefox. Stumble needed to be installed but that was the only thing so far. And unlike Ubuntu, the default theme is actually quite pretty to look at. Boots damn quick, too!
