This weekend, Taylor and I went to visit some Asian markets near Chicago. We sampled every bit of food we could. Fish cakes, pastries, breads, Eel, beef, pork, sushi, etc. We were feeling great! We went to Denny’s for supper and by the time we got back to the hotel room, we were both sick to our stomachs… We determined that since we both felt great before eating the Denny’s, it must have been what did it. I then proceeded to have a MASSIVE panic attack… But two dramamine fixed that. I should have had some clonazepam with me but I didn’t.
Anyway, I’ve also determined that since (a) I wanna BUILD an organ and (b) building a big organ with nowhere to put it is dumb, I’ve decided to instead plan for TWO organs – one small one that I build myself out of wood for a small apartment and one large(r) one that I build by collecting parts for a house.
For the apartment organ, I was thinking small and compact – one manual, 4 ranks:
MANUAL
- Gedeckt 8 (Flute, stopped wood, 61 pipes)
- Principal 8 (Diapason, open wood, 61 pipes)
- Gedeckt 4 (Flute, stopped wood, 12 pipes)
- Octave 4 (Diapason, open wood, 12 pipes)
- Twelfth 2 2/3 (Diapason, open wood, 61 pipes)
- Fifteenth 2 (Diapason, open wood, 12 pipes)
PEDAL
- Bourdon 16 (Flute, stopped wood, 12 pipes)
- Bass Flute 8 (Borrowed from Gedeckt)
Manual to Pedal Coupler, unified tracker action.
And the larger organ for the house – some general guidelines. I like English, German, or American style organs so here’s a vague idea of what I someday want

This is obviously a pipe dream (lolpun), since the organ I modeled this after cost $16,000,000 (Sydney Town Hall Grand Organ), but this or a scaled-down version of this, is what I’d like in the house I eventually buy, assuming I have around 35′ of vertical clearance somewhere. XD Otherwise, knock all the 32′ open stops and the two 64′ resultants off the list.
